Waste of war

Waste of War – Central waste sorting site, Damascus, 2025.

Photographed a few months after the fall of the Assad regime, this series documents a manual waste sorting site in Damascus. Adults and children work there under unsafe conditions, sorting through the city’s waste by hand.

The site reflects years of civil war, economic collapse, and shortages in basic waste management infrastructure. It also shows how informal labor has become part of the city’s survival system.

Insights into one of the most grim scenes in Damascus: the city’s waste sorting site. Children are often seen working here under horrific conditions, with many fatal incidents reported. The site stands as a raw symbol of a city still suffering under the weight of 14 years of brutal civil war, ongoing armed conflict, and severe economic hardship.
